The electronic structure of methanol covered TiO2(110) surfaces

چکیده
We report on the electronic structure rutile TiO2(110) surfaces following the exposure to methanol. Two-photon photoemission (2PP) spectra reveal a strong resonance at 2.2–2.4 eV above Fermi level, which gains maximum intensity at 1 ML coverage of methanol. From the coverage, temperature and emission angle dependence of the methanol induced spectral features and similarities to a related state on water covered TiO2(110) surfaces, we assign the resonance to charge transfer excitation from the reduced five-coordinate Ti d 5c ions to hydroxyl groups on the bridging oxygen rows. 2005 Elsevier B.V. Structure and apparent topography of TiO2„110... surfaces
We present self-consistent ab initio total-energy and electronic-structure calculations on stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric TiO2(110) surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy ~STM! topographs are simulated by calculating the local electronic density of states over an energy window appropriate for the experimental positive-bias conditions. We find that under these conditions the STM tends to ...
متن کاملQuasiparticle Level Alignment for Photocatalytic Interfaces.
Electronic level alignment at the interface between an adsorbed molecular layer and a semiconducting substrate determines the activity and efficiency of many photocatalytic materials. Standard density functional theory (DFT)-based methods have proven unable to provide a quantitative description of this level alignment. This requires a proper treatment of the anisotropic screening, necessitating...
متن کاملVariations of the local electronic surface properties of TiO2„110... induced by intrinsic and extrinsic defects
Variation of the local electronic structure at rutile TiO2(110) surfaces was studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy ~STS!. Structural surface features such as step edges, (132) reconstructed strands, and their terminations were correlated to changes in tunneling spectra. In particular, band-gap states, associated with a reduced surface, showed characteristic variations. In addition, electro...
متن کاملEvidence for the Tunneling Site on Transition-Metal Oxides: TiO2(110).
We present atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images from TiO2(110) surfaces. After annealing nearly perfect stoichiometric 1 3 1 surfaces to elevated temperatures in ultrahigh vacuum, randomly distributed oxygen vacancies are observed. The apparent shape of these defects provides strong evidence that the STM is imaging undercoordinated Ti atoms, as do firstprinciples pseud...
متن کاملStructure and special chemical reactivity of interface-stabilized cerium oxide nanolayers on TiO2(110).
Novel interface-stabilized ceria nanophases have been grown on TiO2(110) by physical vapor deposition. At low coverage, dumbbell nanostructures constituted by reconstructed titania and ceria clusters are formed, while long range ordered nanoxides can be obtained by increasing the ceria dose. Scanning tunneling microscopy and photoemission spectroscopy were used to characterize the electronic pr...
